The volcano was exploding... in color! Autumn is absolutely my favorite time of year to visit Mount Rainier. The mountain slopes are carpeted in blueberry and huckleberry bushes ablaze in vivid reds and oranges. Mountain Elderberry and Ash are festooned in clusters of bright red berries and their yellow leaves add more to the riot of color. Crisp, cool air, a lack of crowds, and if you're lucky, a dusting of snow or a morning fog make for perfect conditions for some really, really good photography. For two days, Joe and I hiked up and down the mountain slopes, fwapping away. (our nickname for taking a lot of photos!) See if you don't agree, there is simply no better time to capture this lovely place.
