BANFF, YOHO, JASPER CANADIAN ROCKIES
Sept-Oct 2022
Seven trips to the Canadian Rockies, and always something new.
This was the first time in Autumn, and I was totally psyched to see Banff, Jasper and Yoho decked in their fall colors. Although the Aspen covered mountainsides like we see in Colorado were less frequent, the magnificent forests of Larch trees in the upper elevations more than made up for it. Larch is a conifer which turns bright yellow before dropping its needles each the fall. Larch Valley above Lake Moraine was particularly lovely and well worth the vertical climb to get there. The Aspen and sumac in the lower elevations were vibrant against the aqua blue waters of the area's glacier fed lakes. The crisp, cold mornings were punctuated by the mournful sound of bugling of Bull Elk, defending their harems. While we made a diligent search for the beasts throughout the parks, our best luck in photoing elk was at a golf course in Banff Township, go figure. Put all this together, with miles and miles or rugged Glacial carved mountains and you have a recipe for dynamite photography. I hope you enjoy my small offering of the beautiful Canadian Rockies in Autumn. You absolutely will want to add this trip to your bucket list!
